PRAGUE
Coming over to Europe I
didn’t have many ideas of where I wanted to travel, so when my friends said
they wanted to go to Prague in the Czech Republic I said, “W hy not?!”
Extremely glad I made that decision because it was an amazing weekend in a
small town right out of a Christmas story.
The first thing Greta,
Emma and I did was make our way to our Airbnb for the weekend and met our host
Max. Max’s place was amazing and showed us everything and everywhere we needed
to go during our time in Prague. The first night we ventured out into the rain
to meet up with our Rugby friends Jack, Pat, Connor and Adam. Not quite having
a plan for anything that night we walked around and made our way to a pub
looking restaurant. We all went out on a limb and ordered the Prague special:
Goulash. It came out and we were pleasantly surprised. Ours was in soup form
and it was kind of like a yummy beef stew in a bread bowl. After that we
meandered around the small streets and ended up at the Beer Museum. It was more
of a casual bar more than a museum but we did get to try a variety of craft
beers that were pretty tasty. A little more exploring and it was time for bed.
Next day was packed
full of adventure. Emma and I got up a little earlier and went to Café Calore
for an amazing breakfast and I got cinnamon pancakes (first pancakes since
being in Europe!!!) Then we met up with all the friends and we made our way
through “Old Town” to check out all the city had to offer, including the
incredible Christmas decorations! On the way one particular store caught our
eye, and how couldn’t “Captain Candy” with barrels filled with candy catch our
eye?? We all got a bag as a to go snack and headed out again.
We made our way
to the famous Charles Bridge that was bustling with people. It is one of the
oldest bridges in Prague and it has numerous small street venders and
performers as well.
Once we got to the other side it was time for the John
Lennon Wall. Formerly a wall that had graffiti to show the voices of political
movements it transformed into a wall full of Beatles lyrics and words for
peace. Police have tried to paint over it many times but by the morning it is
always covered again. We had an immaculate photo shoot by the wall before we
made the difficult walk up the hill toward the cathedral.
Adam, Emma and I were
on the hunt for about 30 minutes after the cathedral to find the 2nd
defenestration of Prague because we could get extra credit for out Theology
class. We didn’t end up finding it but we did get to see a lot of the buildings
and intricate architecture on top of the hill.
On the way down we stopped to
get some Christmassy souvenirs and also to pick up Shelby and her friend Nicole
who was joining us for the rest of the weekend!!! For dinner we found another
small place where we got delicious food (gnocchi for me!) We weren’t sure of
the nightlife in Prague so we ended up doing a big Pub crawl with the whole
crew and it was beyond a great time. The little Christmas streets of Prague
during the day would never give you the idea that they would be huge partiers
at night. Needless to say we had a blast!
Our last day was spent
with just the girls. We decided to test our brains and we signed up to do a
Mind Maze. The premise of a mind maze is this: you are trapped in a room
because of a certain reason and you must use the objects in the room and clues
you find along the way to unlock yourself from the room all within an hour. Our
story was that we were naval prisoners on a war submarine and we had to escape
from a jail cell and the army men’s office before we were interrogated. Through
many intricate and confusing steps we escaped with 4 minutes to spare!!! Very
proud of our teamwork abilities.
After that we grabbed another delicious lunch
and headed to the Christmas markets to take some trinkets home with us. After seeing them all over the city throughout the weekend we finally caved and bought Trdelnik, a circular cooked dough covered in cinnamon sugar. A delicious to end an amazing weekend!
